About

Inês Miguel Oliveira (Santa Eufémia de Prazins, Portugal). Currently based in London, UK

My paintings are diaries. They collect fragmentary moments and objects, precious recollections of time and ephemeral existence.

Working predominantly on paper and textiles, materials such as colouring pencils and found objects populate my works alongside more traditional materials such as oil. This connection and cohabitation between formal and informal materials, fine art and childish scribbles, is one of the many apparent contradictions that populate my paintings.

I’m interested in contradiction and a paradigm of existence. The poetry of moments, of the time that has gone by, of our attempts to reminisce and collect, is fueled by the precise notion that such a mission is condemned to fail. Yet, we try; yet, we make marks and collect objects.

Reflecting on these conditions, my works present themselves informally, making use of contradiction and humour, of found objects, accidents and the unpredictability of the creative process. It’s a body of work that welcomes failure, that recognizes its fragile nature.

Intimacy, the self of self, is built on these premises, on what the work lacks, rather than what it tells. A lack of something, a fault, is always more telling than what is present.
